CBD For Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Athletes

CBD For Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Athletes

Cannabidiol, better known as CBD is a naturally occurring substance and remedy. It can be used for a variety of ailments including pain relief and anti-inflammation.

If you've been around for a while you'll know that Jiu Jitsu can BEAT YOU UP!

Little knocks and niggles are inevitable.

We need measures to address and curtail these issues before they become serious injuries...

So let's get into it!

CBD!

CBD FOR BJJ ATHLETES

A compound derived from the cannabis plant. A plant which has numerous benefits for humanity which are completely separate to its intoxicating effects.

We've seen an absolute surge in CBD products in the past few years to the point that every Tom, Dick and Harry seems to be advertising their CBD sponsor.

We're not here to promote any particular product but just to give you basic outline of what CBD is, how it can be beneficial and how we can use it.

What is CBD?

CBD is one of the 104 chemical compounds known as cannabinoids found in the marijuana plant.

Cannabis has been used by humans to relieve pain since as far back as 2,900 B.C.

The main psychoactive cannabinoid found in marijuana is called THC. This is what causes the “high” that’s often attributed to Cannabis. However, unlike THC, CBD is not psychoactive.

CBD is a great option for those looking for pain relief but not wanting to get high.

It can also serve as a welcomed alterative to taking pharmaceutical drugs, with far fewer side-effects (typically speaking).

How is CBD Beneficial for BJJ Athletes?

CBD has been shown to relieve pain and reduce inflammation!

Reducing pain is an awesome feature for BJJ athletes because we get injured - it's an inevitability - and when we do the pain can detract from our quality of life, ability to focus at work, and at home.

Anything that helps reduce pain without giving a host of negative side effects is welcomed!

Inflammation is at the core of many health issues, and it's certainly at the core of a lot of our joint issues suffered through Jiu Jitsu.

Simple things like a little bit of tendinitis (inflamed tendons) can be aided by the application of CBD!

They say that the effect of using CBD is 'cumulative'. Meaning that the more regularly and consistently you use CBD the greater the effects.

This suggests that a long term regime of CBD supplementation will in turn reduce the overall inflammation throughout your body.

Inflammation in the joints is made worse by our Brazilian Jiu Jitsu practice. To have CBD working toward the opposite effect of reducing inflammation at the same time should go some way to limit your joint pain and long term potential for injury from BJJ.

How should we use CBD as BJJ Athletes?

A great option for BJJ athletes is to buy a topical CBD cream which can be applied directly to your injuries and areas of soreness to manage any pain and inflammation directly.

You can also purchase CBD oil for the more general effects.

The oil can be consumed in a number of ways, most commonly through mouth sprays but gummy bears, tablets and all sorts of other options are available too.

Why not try both?

Have the topical creams for any specific injuries when you need it and the digestible CBD products for a daily intake to achieve that 'cumulative' effect we discussed earlier.

Legality for Athletic Events

In BJJ we don't get tested, hence the massive steroid use visible in the sport but with it growing at the rate it is currently we very well may come to a point were drug testing is a regular concern for BJJ athletes.

Some BJJ athletes compete in MMA as well , a sport which does involve more rigorous testing.

The worry is that because the CBD compound comes from a product which is generally illegal, it could flag up on a doping test.

Thankfully in 2018, the World Anti-Doping Agency removed CBD from its list of prohibited substances.

Conclusion

CBD oil/cream would be a great choice for aiding the recovery after your BJJ training.
